125 Years of Education at Princes Hill

 

We are having a day to celebrate 125 years of education at Princes Hill on Wednesday 3rd December, 2014.

We will commence with the launch of our new school flag at 9:00am on the mini oval.

The flag emerged from artworks created by students during 2014.

The children worked under the guidance of artist, Helen Johnson.

Following this, tours will be offered at 10:00am, 12:00 midday and 1:00pm.

The tours will begin in the gymnasium with short performances showcasing the interests and talent within the student community, followed by

a guided tour of the learning neighbourhoods where the school’s exploration of the concept of change will be presented.

We also welcome our present community. Tours must be booked through the school office (9389 5300).

We request the people coming on a tour register in the gym foyer ten minutes prior to the start of the tour.

All children in the school will be invited to dress up for the day, choosing clothing from a decade within the past 125 years.

 

Tabloid Sports

Transition Event. The children from Preps, One and Two will be working together every Thursday morning throughout November on the large oval in tabloid sports groups. They will be supported by 5/6 children.
Children put away their bags and then line up outside the library with hats and drinks by 9 o'clock.
Please use the front door to allow the kinder families courtyard access to the Prep Neighbourhood.

Time of the Year One Arcade pop up at the Bazaar

Hi everyone,

We have arranged to have our pop-up arcade at the Bazaar on the 16th November at 10.30am-11.30am. Hopefully all the children can be there at this time to run their game or slightly earlier to help set up.

The games are looking fantastic and we are very proud of the children's creativity, persistence and team work. Again, thank you to the parents who have come in to help with the games, it has made the world of difference.

The Year One Arcade: What are we Learning?

The Year One Arcade is coming together.

Thank you to the parents and carers who have come in to help their child's group shape up their game. They are starting to look very sturdy and exciting!

There is so much learning occurring alongside our Inquiry so here is a snapshot of some of the learning occurring in the year one neighbourhood at the moment:

Literacy:

• The children are learning many genres of writing during learning agreement and in writing targets including:
• Letters - to Gabbie requesting a pop up at the Bazaar
• Environmental Print - writing signage and posters for their arcades and the Bazaar
• Procedural Text- Instructions to their arcade game
• Recounts and reflections - related to our excursions
• Thinking Routines - about change
• Reader's response - linked to our sustainability Inquiry: Places, who cares what matters?(Story: Refugees)
• Newspaper Report - after our pop up arcade at the Bazaar
• Through these genres, children are developing their drafting, editing and publishing skills and building their word study and spelling knowledge. 
• The spelling focus is the commonly used words, word endings (s, ed, ing), using a known word as a strategy to spell an unknown word (analogy).
• Handwriting: practising letter formation when publishing and developing fine motor skills.
• 
  

Numeracy:

• Term 3 focus was on Time and the children worked on reading the time, interpreting calendars, measuring the duration of every day events.
• Term 4 focus is on measurement and shape
• Using informal and formal units of measurement to estimate, compare and measure their arcade games and boxes (using unifix, 30cm and metre rulers, measuring tapes)
• Investigating 2D and 3D shapes
• Addition and Subtraction strategy targets which will support mental addition of point scores for their arcade games.

Personal and Interpersonal Learning:

• The children are learning about team work, collaboration, 
• The children are learning to work in teams to complete structured activities within a set timeframe
• Students learn to stay on task and share resources fairly. In response to questions and prompts, they learn to reflect on the team’s challenges and successes and their contribution to the team’s effectiveness.

Design and Technology:

• Using creative, imaginative and inventive thinking
• Offering ideas and suggestions to improve ideas of others
• Working with recycled materials and joining techniques
• Investigate how things work 
• Play with and manipulate materials and think about and describe their properties. 
• Develop basic designs with drawings, models and prototypes
• Explain set of instructions for how something works

Assessment and Reporting

The reading and writing profiles are currently being developed on every child and will be available in your child's portfolio before the end of the year. We are currently administering various assessment tasks and gathering work samples for moderation across the whole school for reporting purposes.

Assembly Preparation

We've been talking a lot in our neighbourhood about change and what it means to be a good global citizen. The children's song 'Change Starts With Me' has been inspired by much of this thinking. As a neighbourhood we've decided that we'd like to symbolise the ideas of global citizenship - peace, empathy, kindness, love and justice by wearing white for our assembly. We'd really appreciate your help by encouraging the children to dress in white next Tuesday. Please come along next Tuesday, we're looking forward to seeing you there and sharing the children's learning with you. P.s, Don't forget, our neighbourhood will be open for parents and carers next Monday and Tuesday to help the children with their arcades. Thank you!

Hi everyone,

• Our Arcade Games are coming along nicely. The children have started building their first prototype and we invite all parents to come to school on Monday 27th October to help give feedback to the children on their games and support them to modify and improve their games. We will be working on arcade-related work that day so you can come in any time. 

• Please note we are Assembly Hosts in Week 4 Tues 28th October. We will be presenting a very special song that we have written and composed ourselves with Nicola's help - it will definitely be a tearjerker.  

• Our current Inquiry concepts are:

Change starts with me!

Play can connect us with each other and can bring us happiness. Sharing play experiences can change how people feel and help make the world a better place.

Being a good global and local citizen includes caring for important places like the environment- forests, gardens and caring for the happiness of ourselves and others (self-sustainability).

We are exploring these concepts through our work building our Year One Happy Arcade and we have also been inspired by Kid President video clips. We have also been thinking about sustainability during the whole school mini inquiry.

• We have our excursion to the Royal Botanical Gardens on Wednesday 22nd October next week. Parents who are volunteering need to have emailed Kate (parent rep) to put your name down. We have our required 15 parent helpers so thank you to those who have volunteered.

The workshops we will be participating in on our excursion involve quality literature around sustainability. The concepts will we be developing include:

• The amazing plants of the Australian rainforest and how Aboriginal people used the rainforest. 
• How plants and animals interact
• Why are plants so important in our lives? 
• Plants as homes, as food and explore their fun and fantasy elements. 
• Plant and animal connections
• role of botanic gardens as habitat for wildlife in cities. 
• By growing healthy gardens for ourselves we can also grow gardens for other living things.
• Growing your own green space and the importance of green spaces in cities. 
• Gardens as also being a great way to grow friendships! 

So much mathematics involved in thinking about our arcade games!!! We are looking at Measurement and Shape especially! How big would your box have to be to fit you in it? Students used various measuring tools to measure themselves and add on more height, width and length so that they could move around in their box.

 We brainstormed what it meant to change the world one step at a time when we wrote the lyrics to our song "Change Starts With Me".

School Disco Friday 24th October

Roll up, Roll up to our wonderful CARNIVAL/DISCO  Night – Friday 24th October from 6pm –8pm at the gym/back oval. We will have an evening of dancing and laughter. There will be a few surprises and some prizes for best costumes and dancers. You may impress us with a hoola hoop or create a magnificent mask – there will be something for everyone! Most importantly it is an opportunity to catch up with our wonderful community. Bring a picnic and a picnic blanket or chairs to sit on – we hope you can make it! Upcoming Excursions

Hi everyone,

We have two upcoming excursions so you will be receiving two notices to sign and return to school.

The first notice you have received is for the Polygot Incursion that will be on Wednesday 29th October. We do not require parent helpers and there are no special requirements.

We will be handing out the second excursion notice this week which is for a day excursion to the Botanical Gardens on Wednesday 22nd October 9.15-2.30 to build concepts around sustainability. The children will attend one of three workshops and we will have lunch in the gardens. Please prepare lunch in lunch boxes, hats, drink bottle, sunscreen. We have around 11 parent volunteers already and can only take 15 so if you are interested please advise Kate (1RJ parent rep). We ask that no siblings attend this excursion.

THE GREAT BOOK SWAP ON WEDS SEPTEMBER 17

THE GREAT BOOK SWAP ON WEDS SEPTEMBER 17

To help raise funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to buy books for remote indigenous communities who don’t have access to books we’re holding a Great Big Book Swap. It also means we all get to have a new book!!!

There are schools involved across Australia and the target is $100,000 to buy 10,000 books.

If every child can please bring a book to school on Weds Sept 17 that they love but no longer want and a gold coin donation, then they can be part of the book swap. By donating a gold coin, they can then swap their book for a new book that someone else has donated.

They just need to bring their books to the gym before school starts on Weds Sept. 17 and the gym will turn into a huge book swapping bookshop at lunch time.

Year One Arcade inspired by Caine's Arcade

Hi everyone,

After showing the children the video: "Caine's Arcade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faIFNkdq96U) they were overwhelmingly inspired by his creativity and the idea of creating something so brilliant out of cardboard. The documentary maker has since creating the "Imagination Foundation' to support innovation in children around the world. There is a global cardboard challenge coming up in October and the global day of play on October 5th that we are also inspired by.

We are embarking on a whole-school mini inquiry into sustainability with the tagline: Places: who cares, what matters? and the idea of creating our own Year One Arcade fits in perfectly. Arcades are places that bring children and adults much happiness as it taps into the universal human need for play, laughter and happiness. We have learnt a lot about happiness and how we can change our feelings and the feelings of others. Fun and games are very important to sustaining our sense of happiness and personal well-being.

Furthermore, many children have identified the environment as something that is very important to them and so it is apparent that forests and nature are places that matter to us. We will be investigating how cardboard and paper are made and what we can do to sustain our forests and environment. Creating an arcade by up-cycling and reusing boxes and recycled materials will support our learning about reducing, reusing and recycling.

We are considering holding a pop-up arcade at this year's Bazaar to showcase our arcade games and bring further happiness to parents and children of our school community. The children will engage in a debate as to whether our arcade should be free to all or have a cost involved and what they think the money should go towards for the school. They will be conducting a toy audit at home to see how many toys they use and how many they don't use to reflect on waste and disposal of plastics and to potentially donate some unused toys as prizes for the arcade.

The children will be writing procedural texts, drawing labelled diagrams for their game designs, creating a model prototype, giving each other feedback and re-designing, and learning about construction. They will need to create instructions, signs, posters, tokens, and there will be a lot of problem solving involved.

Being part of the world-wide movement for creativity and innovation and creating something that will bring happiness to ourselves and others is all part of being a good global citizen. We will be learning more about what it means to be a good local and global citizen. The children discovered that at their age they cannot really volunteer in the community but there are many other ways to be a good citizen.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

1. If you have access to cardboard boxes of any shapes and sizes PLEASE start bringing them in. We are currently having a closing down sale of our Happy Shop in order to make space for an arcade workshop in the Art Studio.

2. If you have some ideas and skills in making things work and building things out of cardboard then we could really use your help to support the children's designs and construction of their games. Please have a look at our weekly timetable (it will be posted this week) to see when learning agreement is on or chat to one of the teachers.

3. During the school holidays please try and take your child to Intensity or Time Zone or any other arcade so that they can get inspiration for their own arcade games. Have a chat to them about how they might create such games using cardboard boxes.

Premier's Reading Challenge Due Date

Hi Everyone, The Premier's Reading Challenge is coming to a close. Please enter the books your child has read online by Monday 8th September. Please print the book list and sign it and return to Simone by Tuesday 9th September. A teacher will then check that the requirements of 20 listed books and 10 choice books has been met and confirm that the student has met the challenge online. Certificates of participation will be awarded in Term 4. Congratulations to all of the children who have been ready with enthusiasm :) Thank you!

Book Week Parade

Hi Everyone,

Today we had our Bookweek Parade at Assembly and spent some time buddy reading with the year two students.

We have had a lovely day and want to share some photos with you.

Library open daily

The library will be open daily for borrowing before school from 8.45, and lunchtimes from 11.10 to 11.40 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.

 

The Junior School Library books will also be issued through the computer borrowing system. One computer is set up for book returns whist the other is for borrowing. Leigh will be there for the returns and borrowing.
It is important that all books are returned through the computer borrowing system.

Please come along enjoy looking at our display, browse, borrow or share a story with your children. Thank you to the parents for their help in the library.

Book week assemblies

·         On Tuesday 19^th August at 8:55am, there will be a Book Week Parade at assembly where children can come dressed as their favourite book character. 

 

·         On Thursday 21^st of August at 2:30pm, there will be a whole school assembly in the gym celebrating the end of the Book Week Inquiry.   It will be during this assembly that each neighbourhood will share their learning and where the collaborative story will finally be revealed.

 

·         On Tuesday 26^th August at 8:55am, Clubs (Animation, Ukulele, Choir) will be the Assembly hosts. 

 

·         Also on Tuesday 26^th August is a Prep -2 Book Week incursion performance beginning at 2:30pm.

Please note that specialists are now on Thursdays in the middle session and Tuesday afternoon due to a change of the teacher planning timetable across the school.

Our learning agreement is currently a mixture of provocations related to our Inquiry and our mini Inquiry for Book Week. Our Change inquiry is investigating how we can create positive change through volunteering, with a current focus on discovering what is important to us which in turn helps us identify aspects of our community that we might like to volunteer to support.

Our book week Inquiry is focused on making connections to reading, book reviews, turning yourself into a book character and being interviewed, publishing and illustrating their own stories, and responding to texts in different ways. We have especially loved watching Michael Rosen videos (We're Going on a Bear Hunt and Chocolate Cake) with his great facial and voice expression - he's a great storyteller.

The purple time throughout the week is a rotating workshop that includes a workshop on TIME (interpreting and creating timetables and personal calendars), a workshop on shared reading and writing (currently responding to the emotional connections we make with texts), and a workshop on sharing our reader's and writer's notebook, home readers and borrowing from the main school library.

Fridays are unique and see the children engaging in a maths inquiry into different aspects of time (telling the time, drawing clocks, estimating and measuring the duration of everyday events) with Mark and Kylie and an afternoon of learning agreement, Year One has Talent and time with their Year 6 Buddies.

Seeking volunteers for Swimming

Hi everyone,

Could you please consider volunteering for one session or several sessions of our swimming program? You should have received the times that your child's roll group are going and we would love to have you come with us on the bus and then to help the children get changed and find their belongings etc. Only one teacher will be going with each prep/year one group so the more parent helpers we have the better.

There will be a sign up sheet on the neighbourhood pin board outside the art studio for you to indicate any possible times you could spare.

SWIMMING PAYMENTS

Hi everyone,

Thank you to those who have returned their swimming notices already. Many swimming notices are being returned without an indication of how payment is being made. The cost is $90 for the program. Payment can be made through Maree in the office using cash, bpay, credit, debit etc. You can give cash to your neighbourhood teacher in a sealed envelope with your child's name if you have already handed in your form.

To celebrate the 30^th anniversary of the Australian Girls Choir an assessment workshop will be held at Princes Hill Primary School on Monday, 18^th August. Book Week

As part of Book Week the students will be participating in a whole school mini inquiry., commencing on Monday the 11^th  of August  and concluding with a special 2.30 pm assembly  on Thursday 21^st of August. A big part of the inquiry will be to investigate, through book talk, how readers connect to the stories they read, and the kinds of personal, social, cultural and literary assumptions the writer is making about their reader.   A reader’s prior knowledge and experiences support readers in responding to the meanings of the texts they read.  Book talk not only encourages students to engage in and respond to the books they are reading, but by listening  to the varied experiences of  their peers, also enriches their own experience of the text. As a community of readers, we would like to extend an invitation for parents to come into the neighbourhood of their child and share a book that resonated with them at a similar age.  Please let your child’s teachers know if you would like to participate in sharing your experience with the children  by arranging a suitable time for this to occur.

Connect to Reading Reading to Connect

A whole school mini inquiry is being planned around connecting to reading and reading to connect for weeks 5 and 6.

This week the Year 1 children will be designing and creating a flag depicting a book, character or scene from a book they connect with. These connections will be shared and displayed in our library.
In writing the children will be writing letters to authors commenting on their stories and asking questions.

The children will be selecting a part from their own narratives and will use collage to create an illustration. We have been inspired by Jeanie Baker.
Both the Action Group and Dance/Drama groups are off on excursions to further inquire into volunteering at the zoo and the Arts Centre. We can't change anything until we know what is important to us? The children are sharing their thoughts about what is important to them in their lives? They are also being asked to show the communities they belong to using a mind map.

How can parents help?
Read and talk about favourite stories and how you connect with them.
Think about text to text connections. Text to self connections. Text to the world connections.

Each year, schools and public libraries across Australia spend a week celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators. Classroom teachers, teacher librarians and public librarians develop activities, offer competitions and tell stories relating to a theme to highlight the importance of reading.
The CBCA encourage the, not for profit, use of the Book Week artwork by schools and libraries. In 2014, some of the best activities relating to bookweek can be found on these sites.
Bookweek for Beginners is a Creative Commons licenced Wiki created by teacher librarians.
The Book Chook is the blog of writer Susan Stephenson and each year gives good information on using the shortlisted books in the classroom.

DURATION OF PERFORMANCE
The performance is 75 minutes in length, including a Q&A. There is no interval.

 

VENUE
The performance will be held at the Fairfax Studio, Arts Centre Melbourne (under the Spire).

 

LUNCH
School lunches may be eaten on the lawn area between the Theatres Building and Hamer Hall or in the Queen Victoria Gardens opposite Arts Centre Melbourne. In case of rain students may eat lunches in the theatre foyers (subject to available space!).

THEATRE ETIQUETTE

We ask that you discuss appropriate theatre etiquette with your students before attending the show to ensure that everyone can enjoy the performance. Information on theatre etiquette can be found on page 4 of the teacher’s resources

Dance and Drama Group

Thank you very much to all the parents for their support of our performance of our Happy Machine. A special thank you to Gabi, Kerri, Kate, Aleshia, Justine and to all the parents for their work to make this a most memorable learning process for the children. We are all very proud of the children's achievements. A special thank you to Nicola for supporting the children in their composition of "Happiness is".

The group will be continuing their inquiry by a visit and tour of the Victorian Arts Centre on Thursday 7 August accompanied by Aleshia, Gabi,Justine, Rita and Maria. We will focus on telling a story through drama.

Zoo Excursion - Parent Helpers Needed!

Calling all parent helpers!

The Year One Volunteering to Help Animals Inquiry Project Group will be going on an excursion by bus to Melbourne Zoo on Thursday 7th August from 9.30am - 2.30pm. We will be at school for normal drop off and pick up times. We will attend a guided workshop called 'Healthy Habitats' to learn about the ingredients required to create a recipe for a healthy habitat. The children will discover how they can care for and look after these special places. We will also be exploring some of the zoos walking trails including the new Lemur Island and Wild Seas exhibits and the Trail of Elephants.

I have space for six parent helpers to assist in supervising a small group of children during the day. If you are available to help please see Kylie.

A Maths Inquiry - TIME

Hi everyone,

We are embarking on a maths inquiry into time. We will be exploring how to measure time, how to estimate time, how time impacts our day-to-day lives (how to read timetables, how much time do we have in a day? Do we waste our time?), how to read the time and how time relates to our Inquiry into change and volunteering. Who has time to volunteer? How much time do you need to make a positive change in our community? How do you spend your time - could you spend more time helping others?

SWIMMING

Hi everyone,

Swimming is coming up in a couple of weeks. The dates are:

Monday 18th August
Wednesday 20th August
Friday 22nd August
Monday 25th August
Wednesday 27th August
Friday 28th August.

We are looking for one parent to come with each roll group as a fixed commitment if possible. We don't know the time of day each roll group will be going yet. It will most likely be that a year one group and a prep group go together and these groups rotate throughout the day.

If you are available on these days please let your child's roll group teacher know.

Assembly 29 July

The Happy Machine Drama group has been working on creating a happy machine as a response to a story about the invention of a machine that can create happiness. We will be performing our happy machine dance and drama creation at the year 1 assembly on Tuesday 29 July.

On Tuesday 29 July could the children in this project group please
 • Meet Rita, Gabi and Justine in the year 1 art studio between 8am and 8.15 at the latest for their makeup and their accessories?
• Come dressed in as much yellow as they can?
We will then go to the gym to be on stage by 8.50. The children have worked very hard on their inquiry and are very excited to share their creation with you. The makeup and yellow clothes are very important for the cohesion of the machine. Please see Rita if you have any questions.

The assembly will include imovie creations from the other project groups, special speaking roles and end with a neighbourhood song as composed by the children with Nicola. Thank you for your support. We hope you can stay and chat with Simone and meet Kylie at the coffee cart after the assembly.
