Zoo Excursion - Parent Helpers Needed!

Calling all parent helpers!

The Year One Volunteering to Help Animals Inquiry Project Group will be going on an excursion by bus to Melbourne Zoo on Thursday 7th August from 9.30am - 2.30pm. We will be at school for normal drop off and pick up times. We will attend a guided workshop called 'Healthy Habitats' to learn about the ingredients required to create a recipe for a healthy habitat. The children will discover how they can care for and look after these special places. We will also be exploring some of the zoos walking trails including the new Lemur Island and Wild Seas exhibits and the Trail of Elephants.

I have space for six parent helpers to assist in supervising a small group of children during the day. If you are available to help please see Kylie.

Thank you!

A Maths Inquiry - TIME

Hi everyone,

We are embarking on a maths inquiry into time. We will be exploring how to measure time, how to estimate time, how time impacts our day-to-day lives (how to read timetables, how much time do we have in a day? Do we waste our time?), how to read the time and how time relates to our Inquiry into change and volunteering. Who has time to volunteer? How much time do you need to make a positive change in our community? How do you spend your time - could you spend more time helping others?

If you have any books or paraphernalia related to time (like antique time apparatus, old hourglasses etc.) could you please bring them in for our display? If you have any ideas or expertise to share with us related to time then please speak to Simone, Rita or Kylie.

Thank you!

SWIMMING

Hi everyone,

Swimming is coming up in a couple of weeks. The dates are:

Monday 18th August
Wednesday 20th August
Friday 22nd August
Monday 25th August
Wednesday 27th August
Friday 28th August.

We are looking for one parent to come with each roll group as a fixed commitment if possible. We don't know the time of day each roll group will be going yet. It will most likely be that a year one group and a prep group go together and these groups rotate throughout the day.

If you are available on these days please let your child's roll group teacher know.

Thank you!

Assembly 29 July

The Happy Machine Drama group has been working on creating a happy machine as a response to a story about the invention of a machine that can create happiness. We will be performing our happy machine dance and drama creation at the year 1 assembly on Tuesday 29 July.

On Tuesday 29 July could the children in this project group please
 • Meet Rita, Gabi and Justine in the year 1 art studio between 8am and 8.15 at the latest for their makeup and their accessories?
• Come dressed in as much yellow as they can?
We will then go to the gym to be on stage by 8.50. The children have worked very hard on their inquiry and are very excited to share their creation with you. The makeup and yellow clothes are very important for the cohesion of the machine. Please see Rita if you have any questions.

The assembly will include imovie creations from the other project groups, special speaking roles and end with a neighbourhood song as composed by the children with Nicola. Thank you for your support. We hope you can stay and chat with Simone and meet Kylie at the coffee cart after the assembly.

Year One Has Talent Videos

Hi everyone,

Here are a few very special Year One Has Talent Videos from the end of last term.

We had Celo performances by Zoe and Grace on the last day of school and we also had a very special performance by David. It's definitely worth a watch - It brought me to tears!

African Beat Incursion

Hi everyone,

Day One of Term 3 we had the African Beat incursion in the gym. We learnt about traditional instruments of Ghana that are used to celebrate and bring joy to all.

The children loved dancing to the beats of the percussion instruments and had a good laugh when the teachers joined together to form a band. They loved keeping the beat on the small drums that they each had a the opportunity to play.

Since the performance, we have collected all of the percussion instruments around the school and the advertising group has been learning about rhythm and beat (ta and ti-ti) and creating rhythms together. They are applying this to create a jingle for their advertisement of the happy shop and the whole neighbourhood will be trying to match percussion rhythm to the blues song we wrote with Nicola last term called 'Happiness, It's what we need".

It was a great start to the term, thank you Luisa for organising it!

Welcome Back Term 3 and important notices

Welcome back to Term 3 to all parents and students of the Year One Neighbourhood! We hope you all had a wonderful break and are ready to push through another few freezing weeks until Spring graces us with its presence.

We would like to welcome Kylie to the Neighbourhood who will be replacing Luisa this term as she takes her much earned leave. Kylie worked with us last term to cover our illnesses and she has made a huge impression on the children. We look forward to hearing more of her stories of her diverse experiences all around the world.

Things to take note of for this week:

  • Year One is hosting Assembly NEXT Tuesday 29th July. Your child may be asked to wear a Yellow t-shirt and possibly bring certain props if they are in the Happy Machine Drama Project.
  • Swimming expressions of interests need to be returned ASAP (circle if you are interested or not) so that Geoff can arrange buses and timetables.
  • The "Advertising/Percussion" Inquiry Project Group will be going on a short walking excursion THIS WEDNESDAY 23rd July to the Railway Neighbourhood House on Park Street to interview volunteers as to why they choose to volunteer and what they do there. If your child is in this project group and you are available to go with us please let Simone know. Students might like to bring their ipad or ipod to record their interviews as the year one ipads are currently out of action. It will be from 10am-11.30am.
